Moving Insurance

You must have moving insurance when you are not moving by yourself. Moving companies have to give a minimum moving insurance coverage of $0.60 per pound. Some movers give a basic moving insurance of more than $0.60 per pound, usually between $0.60 and $1.25 per pound.

Before you find a mover with good reputation ask him about the basic moving insurance that he provides. Accidents can happen to the best mover. No one can guarantee the safe arrival of your household goods, boxes can be dropped or shift during the transportation and furnitures can scratched.

When furniture damaged during the move you need to make a claim. Making a moving claim: Report the damage as soon as possible. Claim for damaged furniture or item must be filed within nine months after the moving company made the delivery. The moving company must acknowledge receipt of your claim within 30 days. The mover must deny or make an offer to you within 120 days of receipt of your claim.

Types of Moving Insurances:
1. Free insurance cover as it is included in the moving quote. Insurance provided by the moving company, usually between $0.60 - $1.25 per pound. You can only claim back a small percentage of the value of your household goods.
2. Declared value: The value of your possessions is based on the total weight of your household goods shipment multiplied by a specific amount per pound.
3. Lump sum value: If your possessions are valuable but don't weigh too much, you may need the Lump sum value insurance. This insurance means you can purchase insurance for a specific amount per $1,000 of household goods value.
4. Full value protection: The coverage of full value protection will pay for repair or replacement of damaged, lost or destroyed goods and property.
